Urinary Infection

Recurrent Urinary Infection / Cystitis

Up to 50% of women may have experienced an episode of infection by their twenties. They are much less common in men.

Symptoms

The symptoms are familiar with urgency, frequency and dysuria being prominent. Occasionally blood may be seen (haematuria).

Assessment

It is important to rule out any underlying predisposition to the episodes however in the main we rarely find a sinister cause. Some of the investigations your consultant may recommend include the following: urine microscopy, urine cytology, urine flow test and scan, ultrasound scan, KUB x-ray, IVU, cystoscopy and urodynamic studies.
